SCHOOL SONG
(H P Bate 1970)
I recall my time at Out Lane with great fondness.
My older brothers John and Paul were among the first intake at the school in 1957, followed by my sister Maureen and brother Steven. After my time, my brothers Andrew and Nicholas also attended the school.
My earliest memories of the Infants are listening to the teacher (no name I'm afraid) reading the book "The Thirteen Clocks" by James Thurber and my first Christmas party in the Infants' hall, looking up at the huge Christmas tree and the excitment of the countdown to the arrival of Father Christmas.
In the Juniors I especially recall Mrs Williams, probably with some awe and fear.
I remember trooping into the hall to watch the launch of the QE2 and the First Moon Landing on the big TV on wheels, and being the monitor changing the large song sheet on the stage during morning assembly.
I also recall the school trips to Colomendy and the school play ... I was the North Wind and can still recall some of the words and songs, though not the play itself, though Copydex and cotton wool played a large part. There was also the abridged (I assume) performance of "A Midsummer's Night Dream" on the terrace next to the classrooms, directed by Mr Matthews. Do you still perform Shakespeare?
I was captain of Roscoe in the 4th Year and, after Mr Trivett took over from Mr O'Connor in Jan. '69, became the first School Captain. I also remember fluffing my lines when presenting the Lady Mayoress with a bouquet of flowers in the summer of '69 ... something that has put me off public speaking for near 40 years!
Many thanks for all the happy memories and I'm so glad to see that the school is still going strong.
My friends at school included Ian Thomson, Colin Lloyd, Peter Smith, John Langdon and Duncan Chell ...I recall walking home from school walking down Out Lane and along Hunts Cross Avenue singing Hey Jude, and sharing the "na, na, na, na, na, na na's ...." between us.
